In place / Out place

November 21, 2010

On thursday we had a lecture about different spaces in the world, places such as Ground Zero, a pub in the cornish countryside, an airport and so on. We were asked to analyse the spaces, what were different about them, and what was the same. The main aspect about this was the people who use the spaces and the emotional connection they have to the spaces. For example Ground Zero, many people feel sad to think back to when the Twin Towers fell, and not many people have much emotional connection to an airport as the building is built purely to transport people quickly. A lot of people would have an emotional connection to the country pub, as it’s usually a very small group of people who go there.

Another point made was that time is valued in completely different ways, such as an airport, everything is time driven. However people don’t give a damn about time in the pub.

What I noticed is that all these buildings were built for certain reason, and their architecture is built, not to make them look nice but for practicality.

We were asked to take a space in Plymouth and analyze it, I’m not sure where I could choose yet.
